What is Legacy Corps?
Legacy Corps is a national AmeriCorps project managed by Arizona State University. Legacy Corps volunteers provide support to the family caregivers, with an emphasis on the need of veteran and military families. The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services operates the program in San Diego County.
Caregivers, typically a spouse or a relative, are often "on the job" 24/7 which makes it difficult for them to take care of their own physical and mental well-being.
Legacy Corps volunteers provide these caregivers with a much needed break. The primary goal of respite care is to provide companionship to the care receiver and allow their caregiver to have time to recharge and recuperate. Volunteers focus on the social and companionship needs of the care receiver and do not provide medical care, transportation, and housekeeping.
